Bitcoin Miners Face Funding Squeeze as AI Expansion Costs Hit $50 Billion

    • BlocksBridge said Bitcoin miners’ AI infrastructure investment is placing growing pressure on their finances, with upfront investment costs and financing costs identified as the main risks.
    • VanEck and BlocksBridge said miners’ debt has surged, and estimated that about $50 billion in additional funding will be needed to complete planned AI infrastructure projects.
    • The report said interest rates, potential equity dilution and fundraising capacity at publicly traded Bitcoin miners including IREN will be key factors in determining the success of their shift into AI.

    Forecast Trend Report by Period

Bitcoin miners are pushing into AI data centers, but soaring upfront investment and high borrowing costs are emerging as major obstacles, a new analysis found.

Cointelegraph reported on October 12 that BlocksBridge Consulting, in a recent Miner Weekly report, said the financial burden tied to Bitcoin miners’ investment in AI infrastructure is increasing. Even after securing contracts with large technology companies and customers, miners still need billions of dollars in additional funding for graphics processing units, data center construction and power equipment.

Funding terms are also diverging sharply by company as financial institutions tighten scrutiny of data center loans. BlocksBridge wrote that major lenders are becoming more cautious about backing data centers, with customer credit quality, contract terms and the likelihood of project completion emerging as key criteria in lending decisions.

IREN, which has expanded from Bitcoin mining into

IREN, which has expanded from Bitcoin mining into AI infrastructure, signed a $3.65 billion GPU financing deal in June at an average annual interest rate of 6%. But a separate $2.4 billion it raised in August carried a fixed annual rate of 9%. The two financings covered different businesses, making a direct comparison difficult. Still, they show that borrowing costs can vary widely by project even within the same company. At Cipher Digital, Google guaranteed $1.4 billion of lease obligations in exchange for warrants representing a 5.4% equity stake, raising the possibility of dilution for existing shareholders.

Borrowing across the mining industry is also rising rapidly. VanEck data showed that, as of October last year, Bitcoin miners’ debt had surged about 500% from the second quarter of 2024. Since then, weaker Bitcoin prices have hurt mining profitability, prompting more companies to pivot to AI. But the funding burden tied to new infrastructure buildouts has only grown.

In an analysis released in June based on VanEck data, BlocksBridge estimated that publicly traded Bitcoin miners would need about $50 billion in additional capital to complete their planned AI infrastructure projects. IREN faced the largest funding shortfall at $21.1 billion, while Riot Platforms and HIVE Digital were short $7.2 billion and $4.6 billion, respectively. The report said access to capital is emerging as the critical factor in determining whether miners can successfully make the shift, despite long-term growth hopes for the AI business.
