Crypto derivatives traded about$18.63 trillion in Q1 2026, roughly 9.6 times the volume of spot markets. We tested leveraged positions with real funds, from a $6.67 Bitcoin perpetual to stop-loss and margin-mode setups, to see where the risk actually sits in crypto leverage trading.

What Is Leverage Trading in Crypto?

Leverage trading in crypto means usingborrowed capitalfrom an exchange to open a position larger than your deposit. Your deposit, calledmargin, acts as collateral. Yourgains and lossesare then calculated on the full position size, not just on your initial investment.

For instance, inspot trading, $500 buys $500 worth of Bitcoin, and you own the coins. With leverage, the same $500 can control a $2,500 or $5,000 position, depending on theleverage ratioyou pick. One major difference is that you don’t own the underlying asset; instead, you hold a contract or a borrowed position whose value tracks the coin’s price.

Please note: WhileLeverage amplifiesyour profit potential, it also amplifies your loss potential. This means that small mistakes you’d normally ignore when trading on a spot account can wipe out your account.

How Does Crypto Leverage Trading Work?

Here’s how crypto leverage trading works:

    1. Fund your margin account: Transfer USDT or another accepted coin from your spot wallet to the exchange’s futures or margin account.
    2. Choose leverage: Use the exchange’s slider to select how much larger your position will be than your deposit; Binance offers up to 125x on Bitcoin perpetuals.
    3. Post initial margin: This is your stake, position size divided by leverage. A $1,000 position at 10x requires $100.
    4. Monitor maintenance margin: This is the minimum collateral needed to keep the trade open. Small Bitcoin positions often require under 1%; KuCoin’s BTC/USDT perpetual lists 0.40%, while Binance uses tiered rates that rise with position size.
    5. Close or face liquidation: If margin falls below the maintenance level, add funds or the exchange will force-close the position at the liquidation price.

    What Does 2x, 5x, 10x or 100x Leverage Mean?

The number before the “x” tells you how many times your deposit is multiplied. At 2x, $100 controls $200. At 10x, $100 controls $1,000. This also means every price move hits your margin at that same multiple, up or down. Here’s what to expect with $100 margin:

Leverage Your Margin Position Size Price move against you that roughly triggers liquidation
    2x $100 $200 49.8%
    5x $100 $500 19.7%
    10x $100 $1,000 9.6%
    20x $100 $2,000 4.6%
    100x $100 $10,000 0.6%

Liquidation estimates assume an isolated long position with a 0.40% maintenance margin rate and exclude trading fees and funding. Your exchange’s figure will differ slightly.

Going Long vs. Going Short With Leverage

Going long means you profit when the asset’s price rises, while going short is the opposite: you profit when the price falls.

For along position, say you open a 5x long on Ethereum at $2,000. Every 1% rise adds about 5% to your margin, and every 1% drop takes about 5% away. Aleveraged long positionfollows the table above, so the more leverage you use, the smaller the dip needed to reach your liquidation price.

Meanwhile, ashort positiontakes the opposite direction. In a perpetual futures market, you don’t need to own or borrow ETH because the contract gives youdirect sellingpower. A 5x short gains roughly 5% on your margin for each 1% the price falls.

    Crypto Leverage Trading Example

To see how leverage works, we funded a Bybit futures account with$6.67 and opened a long Bitcoin perpetual at 25x leverage. That deposit controlled a$162.48 position, so every 1% price move added or removed about $1.62.

We planned to run the trade at 10x, but the exchange rejected the order. At 10x, $6.67 only opens a $66.75 position, and Bybit’s BTC/USDT perpetual requires a minimum order value of 100 USDT. To trade Bitcoin with $6.67, we had to raise the leverage to at least 25x or switch to a smaller coin with a lower minimum.

The$162.48 position works out to 0.002 BTCat an entry price of about $81,240. Bybit set aside about $6.50 as initial margin, which is $162.48 divided by 25. The remaining $0.18 or so covers the fees for opening and closing the trade.

Scenario BTC price Profit/loss What’s left of your $6.67
    Price rises 2% $82,865 +$3.25 $9.92 (+49%)
    Price drops 2% $79,615 −$3.25 $3.42 (−49%)
    Price drops 3.5% $78,400 −$5.69 $0 (liquidated)

Figures are for reference only and exclude fees and funding. The liquidation level assumes Bybit’s 0.5% maintenance margin rate for small BTC positions.

What Is Liquidation in Crypto Trading?

Liquidation is when an exchangeforce-closesyour leveraged position because your losses have pushed your margin below the maintenance level. You lose the margin you put up for that trade, and the exchange closes the position before your losses can grow beyond it.

Every leveraged trade has aliquidation priceset the moment you open it. On our test trade, that price was about$3,000 below our entry. The exchange watches its mark price, and once it hits that level, its liquidation engine takes over. You won’t get a notification before your position is liquidated, but some exchanges notify you after.

A single position getting liquidated is small. What makes liquidation dangerous is the chain reaction. Each forced sale pushes the price lower, which brings more traders to their liquidation prices, and the cycle feeds on itself.

    Cross Margin vs. Isolated Margin

Isolated margin limits your risk on a trade to the margin you assign to that one position. On the other hand,Cross margin uses your entire futures balance as collateral for every open position, so one losing trade can drain the whole account before it gets liquidated.

    Criteria Isolated Margin Cross Margin
Collateral Only the margin you assign to the trade Your whole futures wallet
Worst case on one position You lose that trade’s margin You can lose the entire account balance
Liquidation price Closer to entry Further away, because the rest of your balance absorbs losses
Best for Single trades with a defined risk Hedged or multi-position setups

Traders on cross margin risk losing their entire account in a liquidation, not just the margin on the one losing trade. Cross is also the default on many platforms. Meanwhile,an isolated margindraws a hard line around eachleveraged position.

    Margin Trading vs. Futures Trading

Margin trading means you borrow money or coins to buy or sell the actual crypto asset. In contrast, Futures trading means you hold a contract that tracks the asset’s price, with the leverage built into that contract.

Criteria Margin Trading Futures / Perpetuals
What you trade The crypto asset itself, bought with borrowed funds A derivative contract that tracks the asset’s price
Borrowing You explicitly borrow from the exchange Leverage is built into the contract
Expiry Usually none Dated futures expire; perpetuals don’t
Holding cost Interest on the loan, usually charged hourly Funding payments on perpetual futures
Leverage Yes, usually lower caps Yes, often much higher caps

What Are the Risks of Crypto Leverage Trading?

The main risks are rapid liquidation, losses beyond one trade, mounting holding costs, and exchange failure.

    • Losses can exceed one trade: Isolated margin caps losses at the margin assigned to that position; cross margin can put your entire futures balance at risk.
    • Liquidation cascades: Forced selling can push prices lower, triggering more liquidations. Thin order books may cause stop-losses to fill below their set price, and auto-deleveraging can close even profitable positions.
    • Holding costs: Perpetual funding payments and margin-loan interest are charged on the full position size, so a sideways trade can still lose money.
    • Counterparty risk: An exchange holds your margin, not your wallet. When FTX collapsed in November 2022, it later reported an$8.9 billion customer-fund shortfall, leaving traders unable to access balances.

Before funding a futures account, review the exchange’s reserve disclosures, insurance fund, and regulatory history. Ourcomparison of how Coinbase and Binancehandle security and regulatory scrutiny shows what that check looks like in practice.

How Can Traders Reduce Leverage Risk?

    • Decide the most you’ll accept losing first, then work backward. Keep it low so that no single loss can do serious damage, and even a long losing streak keeps your trade going.
    • Use lower leverage: Lower leverage moves your liquidation price further away and gives the trade room to be wrong for a while.
    • Set a stop-loss: A stop-loss order automatically closes your position at a price you choose, so you exit on your terms before the liquidation engine does.
    • Stick toisolated marginwhile you’re learning.
    • Use price alerts: Crypto trades 24/7, and liquidations happen while you sleep. Set alerts at your stop and halfway to it on your exchange app.

Is Leverage Trading Suitable for Beginners?

Not really. Leverage only works for traders who already have a tested way to enter and exit trades. As a beginner, we’d recommend hitting the following marks first:

    1. Trade spot first: Get comfortable buying, selling, and sitting through drawdowns with coins you actually own. You can learn toread candlestick chartshere to spot trends and momentum.
    2. Practice in a demo account.Bybit, Binance, and other centralized exchanges offer demo or testnet futures accounts funded with simulated money. Run your strategy there for a few weeks and track every result.
    3. Start real trades at 2x–35x on an isolated margin. At those levels, liquidation sits 30–50% away, so timing mistakes won’t wipe out your trading capital.
    4. Raise leverage only when the record supports it: If your logged results over a few dozen trades show a positive average, you can increase it slightly.

What is 20x leverage on $10?

20x leverage on $10 opens a $200 position. Each 1% price move changes your margin by about $2, or 20%. A move of roughly 4.6% against you would trigger liquidation and wipe out the full $10, before fees and funding.

How much leverage for $100 dollars?

With $100, most experienced traders stay between 2x and 5x, which gives a $200 to $500 position. At 5x, liquidation sits about 20% away. Since many Bitcoin perpetuals need a 100 USDT minimum order, even 1x meets the requirement.

    How risky is 100x leverage?

100x leverage is extremely risky. A price move of about 0.6% can liquidate the position, and Bitcoin often moves that much within minutes. On $100 of margin, round-trip taker fees on the $10,000 position alone come to about 11% of your margin.

How much leverage is good in crypto?

For most traders, 2x to 5x is a good range. It keeps liquidation 20% to 50% away and leaves room for normal volatility. Above 10x, ordinary daily swings can close your position. The right amount also depends on where you set your stop-loss.
