OpenAI hasintroduced a new benchmarking tool called EVMbench, developed in collaboration with crypto investment firm Paradigm, to evaluate how capable artificial intelligence systems are at identifying, exploiting, and repairing vulnerabilities in SmartContracts deployed on Ethereum-compatible blockchains.

Smart contracts are self-executing programs that run on blockchains like Ethereum and power decentralized exchanges, lending platforms, and a wide range of on-chain financial applications. Because these contracts are typically immutable after deployment, a single vulnerability can result in significant financial losses for users and protocols.

EVMbench draws on 120 curated vulnerabilitiesit competitions and the security review conducted for Tempo, a layer-1 blockchain co-developed by Paradigm and Stripe. The benchmark is designed to test AI agents across three core functions: detecting security flaws, patching vulnerable code without breaking contract functionality, and executing controlled fund-draining attacks in a sandboxed blockchain environment

“Smart contracts routinely secure $100B+ in open-mprove at reading, writing, and executing code, it becomes increasingly important to measure their capabilities in economically meaningful environments, and to encourage the use of AI systems defensively to audit and strengthen deployed contracts.”

The launch follows two recent incidents that highlighted the risks facing DeFi infrastructure. DeFi lending protocol Moonwell suffered an exploit this month involving vulnerable code written with AI assistance. Cross-chain liquidity protocol CrossCurve was also recently compromised through a smart contract vulnerability, resulting in losses of approximately $3 million across multiple networks.

OpenAI said EVMbench will include multiple capability modes, covering vulnerability detection, contract modification, and exploit execution, and eliminating exploitability within a controlled testing environment. The goal, according to the company, is to set a measurable standard for assessing AIAgents in blockchain security as the value of assets secured by smart contracts continues to rise.

Paradigm, which co-developed the tool, expanded its investment focus last year to include artificial intelligence alongside its crypto portfolio. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman also co-founded Tools for Humanity, the main developer behind World, a blockchain-based proof-of-personhood project. Late last year, competing AI research firm Anthropic published a report concluding that AI agents had already progressed far enough to identify smart contract vulnerabilities independently, suggesting that the cost of crypto exploits could decline as these systems become more widely deployed.
