Alphabet backs leases on 2.4 gigawatts across ten projects, deepening ties with crypto miners pivoting to AI

Google’s parent company is quietly becoming one of the biggest customers of former Bitcoin mining operations as it races to secure power for AI data centers

Alphabet has locked down leases covering roughly 2.4 gigawatts of capacity spread across ten projects.

The move signals that Google’s parent company isn’t just dabbling in the energy-for-AI game. It’s doing so by partnering with companies that used to spend their days mining Bitcoin.

The Cipher Mining deal and the Fluidstack connection

One of the most revealing pieces of this puzzle is Alphabet’s relationship with Cipher Mining. In September 2025, Google agreed to backstop $1.4 billion of a $3 billion, 10-year AI hosting lease between Fluidstack and Cipher Mining. The initial arrangement covers 168 MW of capacity at a facility in Texas, with room to scale up to 244 MW.

In exchange for the guarantee, Alphabet received warrants granting it an approximately 5.4% equity stake in Cipher Mining.

Cipher Mining itself has built out a roughly 2.4 GW development pipeline focused on high-performance computing and AI applications, a dramatic shift from its origins as a Bitcoin mining operation.

Alphabet also backed a previous $1.8 billion guarantee in a deal between Fluidstack and TeraWulf covering 200 MW of capacity.

Why crypto miners are suddenly everyone’s favorite landlord

Bitcoin miners already spent the last decade securing cheap power in remote locations and building out the electrical infrastructure to consume enormous amounts of it. The pivot from mining Bitcoin to hosting AI workloads is less of a strategic reinvention and more of a tenant swap. The buildings and power contracts stay the same. The GPUs replacing the ASICs are different machines, but they need the same thing: reliable, cheap electricity delivered at scale.

Rather than acquiring these companies outright, Google is using lease guarantees and warrant positions to maintain flexibility. It gets access to the power and space it needs without taking on the operational complexity of running mining-turned-data-center facilities.

The Intersect Power acquisition adds another dimension

In December 2025, Alphabet announced plans to acquire clean energy developer Intersect Power for $4.75 billion plus debt. Intersect’s portfolio targets a total capacity of 10.8 GW by 2028.

The Intersect deal gives Google control over greenfield renewable energy and data center projects. Combined with the crypto miner partnerships, Alphabet is building a two-pronged strategy: use existing miner infrastructure for near-term capacity, and develop new clean energy projects for long-term scalability.

    What this means for investors

For publicly traded crypto miners with HPC pivot strategies, Google’s willingness to backstop multi-billion-dollar leases provides a credibility stamp that was previously missing. Having Alphabet as a financial guarantor, and in Cipher’s case a roughly 5.4% equity holder, changes the risk calculus considerably.

There’s a risk dimension worth noting. These are long-duration commitments, with the Cipher-Fluidstack lease spanning ten years. If AI demand growth slows or a technological shift reduces compute requirements, the economics of these deals could sour. Google’s guarantee protects Fluidstack’s lease payments, but it doesn’t protect the underlying business model from becoming obsolete.
