Unstoppable Domains Drops .crypto and .bitcoin Plans

Unstoppable Domains has abandoned plans to seek standard internet recognition for 14 Web3 domain extensions, including .crypto, .bitcoin, .wallet and .brave choosing financialSystem (DNS)

The decision means these Web3 domains will remain primarily blockchain-based assets rather than gaining conventional domain functionality through the current ICANN application round.

    Unstoppable Domains Ends ICANN Applications

Unstoppable Domains and five brand partners have dropped plans to apply for recognition of 14 extensions.

The abandoned extensions include .crypto, .wallet, .bitcoin, .brave, .polygon, .nft, .dao, .unstoppable, .zil and .blockchain along with partner-backed extensions such as .privacy, .anime, .agent and .twin.

The decision also avoids more than $2 million in ICANN application fees. ICANN charges $227,000 to evaluate each new generic top-level domain application, meaning the planned applications would have required substantial upfront spending before any broader adoption costs.

Unstoppable Domains CEO Matthew Gould said the company’s experience showed that the Web3 domain market remains relatively small and niche compared with the expectations created during the 2021 crypto and NFT boom.

Why .crypto and .bitcoin Will Remain Web3 Domains

The abandoned applications were intended to give Web3 domain extensions a path into the traditional internet.

Without ICANN recognition, domains such as .crypto and .bitcoin can continue to function as blockchain based names, including for crypto transactions, but they will not gain conventional DNS functionality through this application round.

    The distinction is important.

A Web3 domain can operate within supported blockchain and Web3 infrastructure, while an ICANN recognized top-level domain is integrated into the traditional DNS used by standard internet browsers and services.

Unstoppable said bringing its existing Web3 names into the traditional DNS would also have created another major hurdle. More than 4 million existing Web3 names would have needed to be registered and paid for within the conventional DNS, while owners would have faced registration data disclosure requirements.

Traditional DNS Already Dominates Unstoppable’s Business

The company’s decision reflects a broader shift in its own business.

Unstoppable had previously opened several refund windows for customers connected to abandoned ICANN plans in September 2025, December 2025 and February – March 2026.

That makes the latest retreat less about abandoning blockchain domains entirely and more about avoiding the cost of pursuing traditional internet recognition for extensions that have not generated sufficient demand.

The decision has nevertheless frustrated some domain holders.

Some customers said they had purchased or retained Web3 domains partly because Unstoppable had indicated that the extensions could eventually expand into the broader internet. The company had also confirmed in February that it intended to apply for several extensions and encouraged customers to secure names ahead of that potential expansion.

Refunds Available for Some Domain Holders

Unstoppable is offering refunds to certain customers affected by the change.

Customers who purchased eight of the affected extensions on or after March 5, 2025, can request refunds. Buyers of .blockchain names purchased since June 5, 2024, are also eligible under the company’s stated terms.

Refund requests must be submitted by September 25, with processing expected to take up to 28 days.

Customers who do not seek refunds can continue holding the names as onchain assets. However, those domains will not receive conventional DNS functionality from this application round.

Unstoppable Domains Is Still Pursuing New Extensions

The company is not abandoning the ICANN system altogether.

Unstoppable has submitted five applications for .agi, .robot, .gram, .hub and .xmr, working alongside partners including Telegram, the 0G ecosystem, Hub Culture and Cake Wallet.

That leaves the company with a more selective strategy: pursue extensions where the potential market and partnerships justify the cost, while keeping other Web3 domains within blockchain native infrastructure.

For .crypto, .bitcoin and the other dropped extensions, the immediate outcome is clear. They will remain Web3 domains rather than becoming standard internet domains through this ICANN application cycle.
