The company that sold over 4 million blockchain-based domain names won’t pursue traditional internet recognition after a last-minute ICANN report proposed rules that would gut on-chain ownership.

Unstoppable Domains, the company that built its brand on the promise that your .crypto or .nft domain would live forever on the blockchain with no renewal fees, just pulled the plug on bringing those domains into the traditional internet’s domain name system.

Founder Matthew Gould announced Wednesday that the company did not file applications for any of its Web3 top-level domains in ICANN’s 2026 expansion round. Customers who bought names under the affected TLDs are being offered refunds.

What happened and why it matters

ICANN, the nonprofit that governs the internet’s domain name system, is opening a new round of TLD applications in 2026, the first major expansion since 2012. For years, Unstoppable Domains had told its customers that it would use this round to bridge blockchain-based domains into the conventional DNS infrastructure.

The trigger was a recent ICANN report that proposed sweeping restrictions on blockchain-based domain ownership. The report surfaced just days before the application deadline and contained provisions that would have required re-registration of existing Web3 names within the standard DNS framework, annual renewal fees, and disclosure of registrant information.

The TLDs affected span Unstoppable’s entire portfolio: .crypto, .wallet, .polygon, .nft, .<a href="https://cryptoz7.com/crypto-market-weekly-bitcoin-soars-altcoins-diverge/” title=”Crypto Market Weekly: Bitcoin Soars, Altcoins Diverge”>bitcoin, .dao, .unstoppable, .zil, and .blockchain. Refunds are available for domains purchased on or after March 5, 2025, with refund requests accepted through September 25, 2026.

    The scale of the fallout

Unstoppable Domains has sold over 4 million Web3 names. Those domains still function within the blockchain ecosystem, resolving to wallet addresses and decentralized websites through compatible browsers and extensions.

Gould described the Web3 domain market as “small” and “niche,” a candid admission from someone who spent years evangelizing it. He noted financial losses associated with the ICANN application process.

Customer reactions have been mixed. Some early adopters are frustrated by refund limitations, particularly the March 2025 cutoff date that excludes people who bought domains years ago during the initial hype cycle.

The company isn’t abandoning the ICANN process entirely. Unstoppable is involved in five partner applications as a registry service provider, most notably for Telegram’s .gram proposal.

    The ICANN problem

ICANN’s recent report made clear that any blockchain-based TLD entering the traditional DNS would need to play by traditional rules. That means re-registering every existing name, charging annual fees, and collecting registrant information. Gould chose not to accept those terms.

    What comes next

For the 4 million-plus domain holders, their assets still function within the crypto ecosystem. Wallet resolution, decentralized websites, and integration with crypto-native platforms remain intact.

Unstoppable’s pivot toward conventional DNS services and partner TLD applications suggests the company sees its future in the infrastructure layer rather than in selling blockchain-native domains to retail customers.
