Circle Internet (NYSE:CRCL) shares jumped 6.0% in pre-market trading on Friday, extending their recent rally after the company announced the acquisition of a significant portion of IBM’s global blockchain patent portfolio.
The transaction covers more than 680 patent families and almost 1,000 issued patents, considerably expanding Circle’s intellectual property holdings as it seeks to strengthen its position across stablecoins and blockchain infrastructure.
The deal was announced on August 20 and initially lifted Circle shares by around 2% in pre-market trading. Momentum has continued into Friday’s session, with the stock climbing to $88.70 from its previous close of $83.66.
IBM patents strengthen Circle’s blockchain technology position
Investors have interpreted the acquisition primarily as a strategic investment in Circle’s underlying technology capabilities rather than a financial transaction.
The scale of the portfolio has helped generate renewed interest in the shares as investors assess how Circle could use the patents to support future products and infrastructure.
Regulatory developments provide additional support
The company has also benefited from an improving regulatory backdrop for the US cryptocurrency industry.
A revised version of the Senate Republican Clarity Act introduces tighter provisions surrounding government-issued digital tokens while leaving private-sector cryptocurrency companies such as Circle outside those direct restrictions.
The changes have added to expectations that greater regulatory clarity could create a more predictable operating environment for established digital asset companies.
Analyst sentiment has provided further support, with bullish price targets from Bernstein and JPMorgan continuing to underpin expectations around Circle’s longer-term prospects.
Coinbase’s renewal of its USDC partnership with Circle has also reinforced confidence in the competitive position of the company’s flagship stablecoin.

The wider environment for cryptocurrency-related equities has also turned increasingly supportive.
Bitcoin’s advance above $71,600 has strengthened sentiment across the digital asset sector, while falling Treasury yields following the US Treasury’s expansion of its bond-buyback programme have helped increase appetite for riskier assets.
